Post Herbum: Innovative Packaging for Whole Herbs

An Eco-Friendly Solution for Convenient Herb Storage

Herbalism, a cherished cultural heritage of Lithuania, has inspired designer Kristina Asvice to create Post Herbum, a unique packaging solution for whole herbs. With its attractive design and convenient features, Post Herbum aims to provide a sustainable and user-friendly packaging option for herbs grown in Lithuania.

Post Herbum stands out with its unconventional triangular shape and sleeve design, making it a visually striking packaging solution for herbal tea. The diamond-shaped style of the packaging allows for the inclusion of two different types of herbs, enhancing its versatility. Emphasizing its commitment to the environment, the packaging is made from eco-friendly, organic materials.

One of the key strengths of Post Herbum lies in its innovative folding design. The boxes are ingeniously die-cut to allow for easy folding without the need for glue or additional fixings. The sleeves are also folded without the use of glue, further enhancing the packaging's eco-friendly credentials. This design approach successfully addresses usability, functionality, and environmental friendliness.

The basic box designs of Post Herbum are crafted from eco-friendly double-sided brown paper, known as Ecoline Brown Duo, with a weight of 290 gsm. This choice of material perfectly aligns with the packaging's eco-friendly purpose, both in terms of color and material. For the pockets, a light milky-white paper called Scandia Natural, with a weight of 240 gsm, is selected to complement the brown color tone.

Post Herbum comes in two sizes. The small packaging measures 155 x 50 x 135 mm, while the larger packaging measures 235 x 50 x 135 mm. These dimensions ensure that the packaging can accommodate different quantities of herbs while maintaining its compact and convenient form.

The development of Post Herbum took place at the Vilnius College of Technologies and Design as part of a thesis project. The project commenced in February 2019 and concluded in June 2019, resulting in this innovative packaging solution.

Extensive research was conducted to ensure that Post Herbum would be an attractive and competitive option on store shelves. The research revealed that box-shaped packages, pastel colors, and subtle illustrations are popular choices in the market. The triangular shape of Post Herbum was chosen to align with the principles of organic packaging and to provide a unique and visually appealing option. The natural color palette and lightweight design further contribute to the packaging's appeal. Additionally, a unique brand identity was created, utilizing special inserts in the packaging to communicate the product's features to the user.

Creating an organic and convenient shape for the packaging proved to be a significant challenge during the design process. However, through innovative thinking and creative problem-solving, Kristina Asvice successfully overcame this obstacle, resulting in the distinctive triangular shape of Post Herbum.

Post Herbum embodies the essence of whole herbs grown in Lithuania, visually expressing their organic and refined qualities. The combination of milky white and brown colors symbolizes the ecological and natural aspects of the herbs. The minimalist illustrations and restrained style highlight the value of the herbs, which are carefully hand-collected. The packaging mirrors the fragility and delicacy of the product it contains.

The intellectual property rights for Post Herbum belong to Kristina Asvice, with copyrights registered in 2019. This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
